Community Site:
LECOM Nursing and Rehabilitation is a skilled nursing facility located in Erie, Pennsylvania, providing both long- and short-term care, including specialty care such as wound care and tracheostomy care. The facility serves individuals recovering from illness, injury, or surgery, as well as residents who require ongoing long-term care. As part of the LECOM Health system, the facility is dedicated to LECOM Health’s mission of providing compassionate, patient-centered care while supporting healthcare education and whole-person care.
Team’s Experience:
The Bridging Gaps intern worked closely with residents to foster a sense of community by developing a community quilt. Residents created quilt squares representing themselves and their past. The squares were put together to create a quilt representing their unique community. This activity gave residents the chance to share things about themselves that others might not know. For dental activities, the intern created dental Jeopardy, and residents got to play against each other. Each resident in the facility received a dental goody bag containing floss, toothpaste, and a toothbrush.
Reflections
My experience with Bridging the Gaps was enjoyable. I got to work with a range of residents and healthcare professionals. My experience showed me how important interacting with people can be and how much it can mean to them. Working with a range of people this summer also really improved my communication skills.
