Community Site:
LECOM Medical Center and Behavioral Health Pavilion, formerly known as Millcreek Community Hospital, provides an osteopathic, whole-person approach to medicine. The behavioral health programs at the Behavioral Health Pavilion were established in 2001 to support the need for inpatient psychiatric services in the Erie community. It remains one of the leading inpatient psychiatric providers in the area, with designated care for all ages.
Team’s Experience:
The Bridging the Gaps student intern sought to nurture the mind, body, and spirit of child and adolescent populations by designing engaging educational activities about ways to heal the three pillars. Mind Day consisted of stimulating brain games pertaining to medical and hygienic habits, followed by a session of yoga and meditation. Body Day focused on presenting proper oral hygiene practices, then testing participants’ knowledge with a Jeopardy game about nutrition, oral hygiene, physical health, and microbial agents. Spirit Day celebrated self, with an emphasis on self-appreciation and gratitude through journaling and artistic media.
Reflections
My time with the kids has forever changed my perspective on who I am as an individual and who I will strive to become as a future physician. Leading with patience and kindness has never rung truer, and I am eager to continue doing so throughout my future. I am also so thankful for the exemplary teamwork and communication shown by the team at my site. They have set a standard that is imperative for team functionality and providing wonderful support for the kids.
