Community Site:
East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) is a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive support to individuals and families experiencing poverty, housing instability, food insecurity, and other life challenges. Rather than focusing on a single service, EECM offers a range of programs designed to address both immediate needs and long-term stability.
Team’s Experience:
The Bridging the Gaps interns worked with the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM), primarily assisting in the food pantry and volunteering in the community kitchen. Their responsibilities included distributing food to community members, organizing pantry operations, and supporting meal preparation and service. Through these experiences, the interns gained insight into the challenges of food insecurity and the importance of providing accessible, nutritious food options. As a culminating project, the students developed 12 unique recipe cards featuring ingredients commonly available in the EECM food pantry, with the goal of helping community members prepare simple, affordable, nutritious meals using pantry staples.
Reflections
This summer, I had the privilege of witnessing the beauty of community serving community. Again and again, it was proven that neighbors know best what their neighbors need, and at EECM, they come out in force to support one another. EECM is a pillar of this community, built by people who share one purpose: showing up for those most impacted by tough times.

I learned that the importance of knowing your community cannot be matched by any additional resources. The value of knowing the people you serve has allowed EECM to be a resilient organization that can adapt to changing times and continue to make community service its #1 priority.
